Several published Journal of Nursing Jocularity articles are available online, Click Here To View With the death of Bob Diskin, Doug Fletcher, Diane Rumsey, Georgia Moss and Debra Woodbury on May 1, 1998, came the end of the Journal of Nursing Jocularity. The Domain Name for their website, www.jocularity.com was never renewed and its ownership allowed to lapse, it has been re-registered and is now used as the Humor section of the Nursefriendly National Directories.

Doug Fletcher Lifetime Achievement Award, Association for Applied and Therapeutic Humor:"Doug Fletcher was a nurse, therapeutic humor advocate and AATH member. Doug inspired people to come together and build a strong network of health and humor professionals dedicated to exploring and developing therapeutic applications of humor. AATH and the world of therapeutic humor lost Doug in a fatal car accident May 1, 1998. Through this award, AATH recognizes and honors both Doug Fletcher and those whose work follow in his tradition.
In an effort to simplify and clarify the major AATH awards (the Lifetime Achievement Award and the Doug Fletcher Award, a.k.a. "The Dougie"), the board recently voted to restructure, rename and combine the two awards into one. The new name is (drum roll, please): The Doug Fletcher Lifetime Achievement Award. ******************************************************
Doug Fletcher, RN, Publisher Journal of Nursing Jocularity, Association for Applied and Therapeutic Humor:"Doug Fletcher was a nurse, therapeutic humor advocate and AATH member. Doug inspired people to come together and build a strong network of health and humor professionals dedicated to exploring and developing therapeutic applications of humor. Doug was a nurse for much of his professional life and worked part-time as an ER and ICU nurse at Mesa Lutheran Hospital in Mesa, Arizona. Most of his attention, however, was focused on a nursing magazine he founded and published. The name of the magazine was the Journal of Nursing Jocularity . The Journal of Nursing Jocularity promoted humor in the healthcare profession by publishing humorous articles and cartoons from nurses throughout the country. This magazine had tens of thousands of subscribers and was readily found in hospital "nursing-staff" rooms and/or "staff bathrooms" for all to read and enjoy." ******************************************************
What happened to the Journal of Nursing Jocularity? Troupe of Musical Nurses Leaves Audience in 'Stitches', Nursezone.com:"Burned out, lacking motivation and about to give up on nursing, Nancy Nurse finds herself in a busy emergency department where she is asked to care for a smelly, unpleasant patient called "The Gomer." Disgruntled, she decides to take "The Gomer" for an MRI before heading home. But when she pulls out her keys to enter the Imaging room, her end-of-day plan goes awry. She and "The Gomer" are sucked in by the magnetic force of the Imaging machine, causing Nancy Nurse to hit her head and be knocked unconscious. When she awakes, she is in a completely different place. There, a cruel medieval cardinal, Florence Nightingale, a maniacal hospital corporate executive officer, an evil four-headed HMO monster and "The Gomer" take Nancy Nurse on a journey of rediscovery to help show her her love of nursing, the keys of the trade and a renewed sense of why she entered nursing in the first place."

Who's Got the Keys:"Who's Got the Keys is a musical comedy based on the everyday, on-the-job life of nursing. The cast of 20 includes nurses who are professional and nonprofessional actors/actresses. While open to the public, it does target nurses. The show is about an exhausted nurse who "discovers the real meaning of being a nurse'' by battling an evil, four-headed HMO monster with help from a wacky cast of characters.Through song, dance, and shtick, it is an expression of empathetic understanding and support for what often is characterized as a thankless profession; one might think of it as providing nursing care to nursing colleagues and the profession. On the day of the premier opening of the 'Keys', May 1,1998, tragedy struck the show which was also being performed as part of the observance of national Nurses' Week. After a rehearsal in New Lebanon, New York/USA, five cast members were killed when the vehicle they were riding in was engulfed in flames after a head-on collision with a tractor-trialer rig. They were on their way to Albany for a rally at the State Capitol by a grass-roots nurses' organization called the Florence Project which publicizes problems related to health care. In tribute to its lost cast members, Who's Got the Keys premiered in May of 1999 and has since presented performances in several cities in the US." ****************************************************** Also online:
