Annals of Internal Medicine "Prevention of Central Venous Catheter-Related Bloodstream Infection by Use of an Antiseptic-Impregnated Catheter." Retrieved from the World Wide Web March 20, 2001 from the World Wide Web:"Bloodstream infection related to short-term use of noncuffed central venous catheters is a common and serious problem. Technologic innovations to reduce the risk for these infections are needed." http://www.annals.org/content/127/4/257.full ******************************************************
Central Venous Catheters, Arrow International:"Arrow offers the broadest range of central venous access catheters in the industry. Pioneering innovations like ARROWg+ard® antimicrobial infection protection, Sharps Safety components, Arrow Raulerson® Syringe and Blue FlexTip® are just a few of the features that make Arrow the most trusted name in venous access. Single Lumen, Double Lumen, Triple Lumen, Quad Lumen, Five Lumen, Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter." ******************************************************
Acute/Intermediate Care Catheters, Bard Access Systems:"Bard Access Systems offers a variety of acute care and intermediate-term catheters to meet your access needs. Where immediate access is required, this product group is ideal for those who need short-term to intermediate-term therapy.
Due to its silicone construction, Bard's popular Hohn® central venous catheter provides the benefits of excellent biocompatibility and safety in a short-term, non-chronic catheter. Hohn catheters are packaged in procedure-specific trays containing all catheter components, making them easy to place or exchange at any time, in any location. As a result, the Hohn catheter is the catheter of choice for short-term and intermediate-term access. The Hohn catheter is available in single- and dual-lumen configurations." ******************************************************
Groshong, Bard Access Systems:"The Groshong line of central venous catheters offers the latest in technology. Unlike traditional open-ended catheters, the Groshong catheter has a rounded, closed tip and features the patented Groshong valve.
The Groshong valve opens inward for blood aspiration and outward for infusion but remains closed when not in use. Because the valve remains closed when not in use, it literally seals the fluid inside the catheter and prevents it from coming in contact with the patient's blood. Thus, weekly flushing with saline is all that is required to keep the catheter patent. The valve also eliminates the need for routine clamping of the catheter. The Groshong catheter increases patient safety, reduces maintenance and provides the patient with an overall better quality of life." ******************************************************
Hickman®, Broviac® and Leonard® Catheters, Bard Access Systems:"Hickman®, Broviac® and Leonard® Catheters. The Hickman, Broviac and Leonard lines of chronic, tunneled central venous catheters offer the time-tested standard for proven performance and reliability.
These catheters are designed for both pediatric and adult use. To best fit each patient's physical and medical needs, these catheters have been developed in an extensive variety of French sizes. Bard Access Systems also offers single-, dual- and triple-lumen catheter configurations." ******************************************************
Midlines, Bard Access Systems:"New color-coded hubs mean greater safety and less confusion. When you need a midline catheter for intermediate-term therapies, Bard Access Systems is making a noticeable difference. And that difference is in the hubs. A unique system of color-coding Groshong and Per-Q-Cath midlines readily identifies the type of catheter before, during and after use. This innovation, while simple, differentiates our midlines from PICC's, which in turn helps eliminate confusion and promotes patient safety." ******************************************************
PICC, Bard Access Systems:"Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters (PICCs) are designed for the administration of IV fluids, blood products, medications and parenteral nutrition solutions, as well as blood withdrawal. The catheter is placed into one of the large antecubital veins and is threaded into the superior vena cava above the right atrium.
Bard Access Systems offers the Per-Q-Cath® line of open-ended PICCs as well as the popular Groshong® PICC in a variety of French sizes, including single- and dual-lumen configurations. Bard also offers a variety of tray configurations, including the full procedural tray, making PICC placement easy and convenient." ******************************************************
Central Venous Catheter Complications Video, Food & Drug Administration:"This three part educational video can now be ordered from the National Technical Information Service (NTIS). A five minute preview is available as a streaming video presentation. The preview features Dr. Walter Scott of FDA discussing catheter tip location. This program follows "a day in the life" of two residents as they deal with the complications associated with the use of central venous catheters (CVCs). Surgical landmarks and underlying anatomy for CVC placement are reviewed. While assessing specific patient needs, they discuss catheter selection; patient preparation and positioning; vein vs. artery differentiation; and EKG monitoring. Radiology and pathology case reviews are presented. The importance of infection control and peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) use is presented, with a final note on home care." ******************************************************
Catheter, central venous, Medicinenet.com: A catheter (tube) that is passed through a vein to end up in the thoracic (chest) portion of the vena cava (the large vein returning blood to the heart) or in the right atrium of the heart.
Central venous catheters have a number of different uses. A central venous catheter allows concentrated solutions to be infused with less risk of complications. It permits monitoring of special blood pressures including the central venous pressure, the pulmonary artery pressure, and the pulmonary capillary wedge pressures. A central venous catheter can be used for the estimation of cardiac output and vascular resistance. The near end of the catheter may also be connected to a chamber for injections given over periods of months. A central venous catheter saves having to have frequent small injections or "drips" placed." ******************************************************
Rita Wickham, MS, RN; Sandra Purl, MS, RN; and Diane Welker, MS, RN. August 1996. Medithesis. "Long-Term Central Venous Catheters:
Issues for Care." Retrieved from the World Wide Web March 20, 2001 from the World Wide Web:"Infection is a well-recognized complication of all types of catheters.26,39-41 Infections are potentially life-threatening, particularly in patients with neutrophil counts of less than 500 cells/mm, in those with rapidly declining neutropenia, or those with protracted neutropenia.42 Local infections, including exit site and port pocket, and tunnel infections can occur, as well as systemic infections from colonized thrombi or fibrin sleeves or from intraluminal or extraluminal catheter colonization." ******************************************************
Central Venous Catheters, What is a central venous catheter? Webmd.com:"A central venous catheter, or vascular access device (VAD), is a long, thin, flexible tube used to give medications, fluids, nutrients, or blood products over a long period of time, usually several weeks or more. The catheter is inserted through the skin into a vein often in the neck or chest. It is threaded through the vein until it reaches a large vein near the heart called the superior vena cava." ****************************************************** ****************************************************** Commercial Providers:
Arrow International:"Arrow International combines technology and product innovation to extend the use of catheterization for the diagnosis and treatment of critically ill patients. Arrow disposable critical care catheterization products are used principally to access the central vascular system for administration of fluids, drugs and blood products. These products are also used for patient monitoring, diagnosis and pain management. Nurses' Station:"The idea for the Nurses' Station Catalog was conceived in 1989. After searching the marketplace in response to customer inquiries, it became obvious that there were no catalogs of this type serving the nursing profession. To be sure, there were several catalogs offering nurse's uniforms and a smattering of professional items. But there weren't any catalogs at the time offering a range of gifts, clothing, professional items, name badges, shoes and scrubs for nurses. It took two years of hard work to gather samples and put a together a catalog of the most unique and high-quality items for nurses."
